Ha, so I apologize. I totally defaulted on Spew #50, into which I’d intended to spew oodles of gift art for you spectacular people, but that plot is going to have to waaaait until I get my life back. In the interim, know that you people rock, and while even the simple support of a fav means a good deal to me, you guys that take time to leave thoughtful comments and knock nonsense back and forth with me (and you know who you are!) should know how much you freakin’ make my day. :)

A few gift doodles did make this spew, however!

Robin Hood, Sir Hiss, and Woodstock are for dear Emily, so far away in Utah, who is so awesomely awesome and I miss very muchly.

Reppy is for Reppy! Reppy is a deep-sea dragon with luminescent venom and a heart of gold, and ~reppy is a sweetie, quite imaginative, and an absolute kick to chat with!

Pfft! Some Tom Harrison for =saylem, because her Penn’s Woods makes me drool (in a good way!). Mr. Harrison is a werewolf, a bit of a grouch, and an extremely cool character, as are all of Saylem’s.

Barbossa is for the several dozen people I suspect watch me in expectation of the day I draw him again. WELL THAR ‘E IS.

Davy Jones deep in Rubix Cube Land is completely the brainchild of gifted funny-pants ~warrioronlydude, which I thought was so hilarious I had to try my own hand. If you’re into Pirates (or even just pirates!) and you like a good chuckle, I’d highly recommend her comics.

Aaaand, my brain checked out for the night and I couldn’t think of a single intelligent thing for Ben, Morgan, and myself to be chatting over at the bottom, so you’ll have to use your imagination. Lord only knows what kinds of critiques they would make were they to watch over my shoulder as I doodle.

Edit: Trivia! Morgan is actually in this spew nine times. Damn shapeshifter.

I like how there is so much going on and all the action that's in it. How you you go about the basic constrution of the male figure?

Oh man, very bumblingly. I roughly use the eight-heads-tall scale thing (you know, this thing: [link]) for proportions and I tend to block in figures by shapes first. So like I'll sketch the ribcage as a big... ribcage-shaped shape and the hips as a ball and so on and then connect them. I generally do a lot of light sketching putting all the bits in place before cleaning them up into a form.

Always start with the head, this I have learned. Do the head, in fact do the head nearly to completion if you can, because you measure everything off it AND because there's nothing like doing a whole cool drawing and then coming to the face, the most important bit, and somehow not being able to pull it off right. Ruins your day, it does.

Ben has what I think of as the 'Disney Hero' body type. He's got broad shoulders and his mass is in his chest and arms although he's got decent muscles in his thighs. He's kind of like an hourglass sans the lower bulb and that's just what I try to keep in mind while I sketch him. I have something like a shape theory going for most of my characters, for example I try to keep the shapes I make Cornelius up with rounded, for Tom shapes are as sharp as I dare make them, and for Ben it's all about broad, angular shapes.
