BrainSpew the 59th by Altalamatox BrainSpew the 59th by Altalamatox
Well.

I’ve been dead. Sorry ‘bout that, it happens. Learned to go with a stone coffin this time, far less worms.

Um… pfft. Look, drawings! Ben likes little dragons. Big dragons are okay too, but not as easy to dropkick into submission as the small ones. The unicorn might constitute the only traditional media (pencil aside) I have in my gallery as of now. And it started as a joke, but now I’m seriously considering writing a unicorn allergy into Cornelius’ canon. 8D

So many dragons! Forgive the really repetitive builds, I’m just trying to get into the whole dragon thing again, weird variations are on the charts.

And thank you, snail, for filling that inevitable last awkward empty spot. (Although you are not a dragon. But if you’re proportionate to the pile of human ashes then you at least qualify as ‘Quite the Snail.’) Been a while since I used a gastropod to fill a space, remember when I used to do that all the time? Ffft, what was that?

Heads up: school’s on, I’m gone. Looking to be a fun but demanding semester, hopefully I’ll have time to keep up with the interwebz but either way know I might be a little nonresponsive during the week.

Maybe you are fireproof. Or immune to graphite fire.

Can I ask you something?
How in the name of GOD do you draw jaws? o.O

They're so god damn hard..
I can literally draw EVERYTHING but I have so many problems drawing jaws..
Cheekbones and all.
Your work is so perfect. I'm so ashamed just looking at my work...... *sobs*

Hey, thank you very much!

Jaws? I first learned by redrawing the faces of animated characters, because you can pause the movie at anytime in the act of speaking and get an idea of where things move when we talk.

I also picked up really bad habits from this because I didn't study how the jaw is actually built beneath the flesh, and was just kind of guessing at cheekbone marks and such. So I'd also suggest finding a book/site on portraiture. It's been years, but the book I learned a lot from as a teen was Drawing Portraits by Douglas R. Graves.

Draw your face from some different angles, draw other people if you can. Attempt realism. Practicing realism will help you SO much. My realism is TOTAL crap and I throw a lot of it away, but it makes me notice things about how the face really works that I can bring into my cartoons later.

And if we're talking animal jaws, same deal. Set aside some hours, find yourself one of those really awesome zoo photographers we've got around dA, sit down, and draw animal faces ad nauseum. I've also learned some stuff about critter faces from sketching from DreamWorks films like Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar. Animation is great to learn from again because the characters move all over the place and you catch the same figure from so many angles.

No shame! We're all learning here. :)
