BrainSpew the 69th by Altalamatox BrainSpew the 69th by Altalamatox
Man, it's entirely too late for artist commentary. :p

Okay, the weed type Pokémon will only make sense if you've ever looked at the stats for the Oddish family. Weed Type Pokémon. They were asking for this. Why a Wigglytuff I don't know. I just hate them.

Crikit is Penny's most favorite pet of her mini zoo. I mean to design some gryphons for the Network, they're somewhat like horses in that they're almost all domestic and bred and trained selectively for work/show/play whatever. I won't pretend like I've laid down the rules for them just yet but rest assured there will be all cuts of them, from little playful things like Crikit to big damn bird-cats that can carry riders.

What I have designed to a decent degree are the first of my humanoid races, the centaurs. I have a small thesis on them I'll shove at you later about their origins, how they work, and how they fit into society today. As for Reece and Harriet, they're from Cornelius and Diana's side of the stories, that is they work at the capital. Harriet's in the centaur equivalent of her seventies and is a retired school teacher, Reece I don’t know as much about except that he's married with a kid and a kid on the way, the first of my characters to have children which is mindboggling for me.

My hypothesis is that if you like centaurs already you will probably not like mine. (But you wouldn't be watching me if you were looking for noble, beautiful fantasy races, now would you?) They wouldn't be caught dead prancing around in a state of nature (well, okay, there are hippies in all races) and are not all magically in their twenties with chiseled abs. Well. Except for Shad. Can't get much more chiseled than a statue, can you. Shad is an artist's representation of a centaur and he's the one bone I'll toss you if you're after big gorgeous classical centaurs, the rest will be made of real humans and real horses, thk u vry mch.

I love your centaur designs! One note though--Harriet's torso looks well past middle age, but her body looks young. As horses get older, their bodies degenerate as well. Usually this manifests as being hairier, getting a hay belly, or developing a swayback and pronounced withers (so kinda like a lot of humans, actually). Their fetlocks tend to drop as the tendons lose their springiness, and sometimes their lower legs lose definition as well from collection of fluid around the joints.

I would imagine centaurs would probably suffer from these things less, since they can be proactive about their health problems, but some of them (like the swayback) really aren't things you can prevent.

And now I am rambling about horses, sorry for the word vomit, I am excited about everything pertaining to the Network, goodnight!

Excellent feedback, thank you! I knew it was bad of me to not show her age in these doodles, I think I was struggling a bit getting down just the basic centaur form at the time. Awesome. I will keep these points in mind next time I draw her, thanks! :)

I wish I could be that productive... I love sketches, but not good with them. I just finish them, turn into linearts, or they are not so nice sketches just messy scraps.

I love your brain spews. So nice and neat, with great pictures and ideas! Do you draw these with pencil and paper or on an art program with a tablet or something? If you draw it with regular old pencils and paper, how do you make it so clean and white? If you have time I would love a reply. LOVE your art!

Hey, thank you, glad you like my nonsense!

I almost always draw with .5 mech pencils on ordinary copy paper, I find that's the best combo for the cleanest lines with the least smudging. I rarely ink things but when I do it's done slowly and with much soft cursing in Photoshop with mah tablet.

When I scan my pencil work I'll knock the settings down pretty dark so it picks up my finer marks. Then I'll bring it into PS, use the brightness settings to bring the white back to white, set the layer to multiply, and copy it a couple times to get the lines back down to black. I do digitally clean up whatever specks and smudges survive the process but that seems to help keep things clean.

Hope that's helpful! Thanks for the questions!

Dude, you're totally welcome. Your nonsense is great, it makes my day. (:

And that's reassuring, knowing I'm not the only one who draws on copy paper with regular old mech pencils! I always felt like everyone else who draws had all this fancy gear, which makes your art especially inspiring to me!

And it is helpful, thanks. I wonder if I could do that in SAI... Hopefully I can figure it out, since I don't have Photoshop. Yet... Haha.

Well thank you, Altamatox!

If you think centaurs are hellishly hard to draw, might I suggest taking a look at a comic by Donna Barr? www.stinz.com
Some very well drawn centaurs and a very practical look for that awkward fitting together of human hips to horse shoulders.

And I must say that you did a fantastic job on the Centaurs! I've never seen an old one before-- well, other than a wise old male with a beard-- let alone an overweight one. You designed them both extremely well, especially with how Reece's body flows!

LOL Weed type. Win. I never thought of it that way. BUT I HAVE, however, thought of centaurs of all classes. Thin, muscular, average, fat, different breed types and ages, and even 'miniatures' which are like the dwarfed humans haha. Hobbit centaurs O.o I drew a whole village when I was little of centaur. Obviously the picture was utter shit since I was about 10 but I want to re-do it now..... lul.

The way you use SHAPES amazes me. The lion and the Persian near the top, among other things from your Spews, have taught me more about...artistness...than I ever knew...before. Every once in a while they float through my brain as examples of something I should practice one day.

</extremely articulate>

Also, your centaurs are indeed like no others I have seen before and I love them, especially the child.

I'd love to see your take on other fantasy creatures. Satyrs and Nymphs, perhaps?

I wonder what a Network-wide Woodstock would be like. Hippie Elves would make so much sense, don't you think? Meanwhile the Dwarves are curmudgeonly good ol' boys with an overly traditional and conservative view. Then again, considering we're getting such creatures as galatini and whatever the heck Morgan has transformed into this week, I doubt you'd rely on such common fantasy archetypes.

Oh man, nooooo, I love using tired old fantasy archetypes! :B I think I like to make fun of them, mostly- you know me, I don't really enjoy taking things too seriously. I've decided, so far anyways, I'd really like to avoid using elves (meaning the Tolkien-esque ones), dwarves, and vampires because everything I could ever do to them to make them interesting to me has already been deftly covered by Terry Pratchett. The Network does have nymphs (Marie, the chick who's sometimes a heron is half-nymph), probably no satyrs though. (: Hopefully I'll get my notes together soon and introduce the lurigadaun (like Bridget, that little shizeshifter in my recent lineup) who are based somewhat on leprechauns.

freaking awesome art dump and so ironic. I am in a centaur phase too and was thinking the same thing! You don't see kids around, and I was doing my own designs mostly on... how they heck do they grow up to a young kid age? It's stumped me for a few weeks but now I am FINALLY getting some sketches in the work, your art has totally encouraged me here to keep at it. Tammie by the way is adorable with her Chimera teddy there, I love how he has two names you gotta love that! And I eagerly look forward to Penny and her training of Gryphons and freaking cute Crikit there. :B Amazing work as always Altalamatox! I always freak when I see your art waiting in my inbox. :D
