BrainSpew the 83rd by Altalamatox BrainSpew the 83rd by Altalamatox
Oh, school is so nearly done. And done for real. For the first time in eighteen years I won't be going back to classes this fall. Or ever again. Wow.

Otherwise, ahaha, sorry for that last thing there. Actually, no, you asked for it. We regret nothing here.

LOVE. There is no other word for the way I feel about your BrainSpews. I always look forward to them and enjoy looking back at them for inspiration when I'm feeling art-blocked.
Also, I must say that Master Duncan is looking particularly fantastic here.

That flamingo at the end. (unless i am mistaken... anyway!) How do you come up with all this? I suppose this only a fragment of the amount of things you draw in total... Roughly, how much time do you spend drawing during a day?

I wish I could plead drugs or insanity but honestly it's probably mostly boredom. XD

Actually almost everything I draw ends up on dA and most of it in these dumps. These usually cover a month's worth of drawing, except these last few which have been doubled up months since I've been busy and not drawing so much. Sometimes I won't draw for three days, sometimes I won't not draw for three days, so I can't even give you a usual hour count. But these posts are a good show of how much I side-doodle over five weeks or so. I can say a happy day for me involves at least six hours of drawing/painting/sculpting.

Hahahaa, I wish boredom would have the same effect on me! That's amazing. 6 hours of creative flow does sound both healthy and appealing...

But I must ask, don't you ever make those crappy, not-at-all-done sketches? Because all your spew-sketches are so well done... I'm just being curious, since my sketches often turn out rather crappy and rushed. Or do you simply enter some sort of zen-mode when you doodle?

Haha, well, look at it this way as well: that's six hours of sitting on one's bum turning into blood clots and jelly while frying one's eyes out staring into a light source. I've been given a weirdly merciful metabolism but I deserve to look as out of shape as I am.

Oh, yes, I do sketch, but mostly as thumbnails for actual drawings. I don't usually keep those... let me go find a few I'd posted a while back. Ah: [link] I suppose I should say these dumps are for doodles, which I guess I define differently than sketches. Doodles are like mini drawings, sketches are quick and dirty and for figuring something out. They are one thing I don't post, and the only other things that don't make it are FUGLY things, which happen to the best of us. Those go in the recycling bin, sometimes ripped into a few pieces to hide them from mortal eyes.

Throwing away what you're not happy with does sound smart, when you put it that way... Perhaps I should begin putting that one to practice, I'm taught to keep almost every single ounce of crap I produce, but all it leaves is a massive chaos at my room. Thanks for sharing! I feel a whole lot smarter now!

I am very curious to what program you use... if you use any at all. A lot of your drawings look like they were done simply by pencil. What are your settings?
I do love your work and I am always look towards yours for inspiration.

That's because most of my drawings are simply pencil. :) When I do draw digitally I use Photoshop and an Intuos4 tablet.

As always, these are so awesome!!! Question, though, who is Neridia? Is she new? Or have I missed her in your gallery?

Neridia's an old character, but I haven't discussed her much.

She's a naiad, a water nymph, adopted by the Librarians who found her messed up and abandoned in the city. She lives in the Library's central fountain and takes meticulous care of all things flora in the building. Concerning bookly battles with spawned monsters, Neridia is our medic, willing healing properties into water. She's cripplingly shy and hardly shows herself let alone speaks, although a few individuals have built up trust to the point of quiet friendship with her. She's opposite the explosive, fiery Vra'kriss, who finds her and the violated innocence she represents deeply unsettling. Neridia is also, probably, the most powerful Librarian but would only find that kind of fury and strength if her 'site', the fountain she is utterly bound to, is under threat, going batshit on the offender, as nymphs will. She appears to be absolutely oblivious to this possible side of herself or the range of her abilities. She's only a kid after all.

I haven't talked much about Master Dhunkaneeros yet. He's a quite elderly, large, and wealthy dragon living outside the city of Altalamatox and a side character in the Library story group cast thing. He's currently on his retirement cycle and has been spending his free time catching up with friends and books, taking on the occasional commissioned sculpture, growing an orchard on his property and fatter by the day. He's kind of a smiley eccentric old gentleman in the body of a five-ton magma-filled monster.

Duncan's reluctant about his size (dragons grow continuously throughout their lengthy lives, long past the point of being able to fit in houses or even city streets) and shape (having always been surrounded, as most dragons are, by human and humanoid friends and strangers), and has something of a human complex. He's currently pouring a lot of cash into a tailor-made transformation spell that should allow him to temporarily shed his scaly skin in favor of something he can walk about in unnoticed and experience again all the curious aspects of the world his enormity denies him.

Happy you like his design! Next Spew will have a human Duncan in it, I wonder if you'll recognize him from his unusual whiskers. ;)

Also, MorganXMorgan = new OTP.

Also also, bio!Tom is almost as hot as norm!Tom, but I have a thing for white hair, so only almost. Slash-inclined brain cells think that Tom and Morgan is a viable and attractive crack pairing.

Congrats in your pending graduation. ^^

Excellent catch! Network dragons digest things by means of the corrosive 'biological fire' that fills their innards (which they can famously exhale to cinematic effect), so they can glean calories from most anything. But they get the bulk of their dragon-specific nutrients from rocks, naturally or artificially rich in certain minerals and magics. They must eat both to function quite right, but as they'd live much longer on a diet only of the latter they've been pegged primarily as lithovores. They're meant to bust up rocks with their hard and powerful bodies and then either swallow the pieces whole or melt them into a delicious slurpable lava. Between six clawed limbs, a crushing tail, the ability to vomit up an inferno and an intellect rivaling humanity's, dragons don't hunt with their teefs and have no use for flesh-puncturing canines.

To be honest, they could and should do without teeth entirely, and have beak-like edges to their jaws. This is one of the times my art half is dragging behind my writerly half not quite getting behind the logic because teeth are just fun to draw...

(The majority of dragons in Morgan's world (Hellecker) are herbivorous, however. And mostly eaten by their carnivorous cousins. Until humans started breeding tasty livestock in convenient herds. Dragons are just another strain of dumb animals in Hellecker, and mighty pests most would say.)

I wonder if they're more like mammal teeth and they only get two sets per lifetime and they can get ground down (like say, over hundreds of years...) while the "sexy monster" dragons have the more reptilian teeth that replace themselves.

I figure at least the latter has got to work something like that, with their lifespans dragons would not only have to worry about natural teeth decay, but the wear and tear of hundreds of years of nomming...
