Eric Progression Sheet 07-12 by Altalamatox Eric Progression Sheet 07-12 by Altalamatox
Eeh, been in a bad art crash the last week or so. But the need to make stuff goes on even when the art isn't coming, so I put some time into building another of these things as I've had requests for a progression for Mister Thedrial.

He's really the last character of mine I've drawn with any frequency for long enough to do a decent progression for, so I think I can promise to stop bothering you with these now.

Yay more scary old drawings! I was 17 in 2007 when I made up Eric, don't have any clear memory of the moment, think I just let myself get carried away one afternoon with an interesting scenario as I do. Until I consolidated all my existent stories into the Network storyverse a year ago, Eric was some vague project on the backburner. I drew the hell out of him last year to get him up to speed.

The Scoop on Eric if you're new and wondering what exactly I've been smoking for four years.

I love the pic where Eric is freakin' ticked off while he is trying to eat his piece of cake. He is so cute--even when he is mad! I just to hug his big belly! I am a dummy!

Due to an almost typo, it has suddenly occurred to me that I should very much like to refer to his transformed state as a 'nomster'.

IT HAD TO BEEEE.

My roommate's fault again for the chibification. I told her Fluffers is damn near a chibi already, she told me to do it anyway. Came out too cute for his own good.

And yanno what? SHE WAS RIGHT. It could not have gone undrawn. I theorize that more of your characters should be subjected to chibification. THE ADORABLENESS WOULD BE TEN THOUSAND TIMES WORTH THEIR VENGEANCE.

I'll admit, this is really interesting to see. I'm completely jelly of artists, since they can see (and show) how their characters progress over the years. It's hard to do that as a writer... :( But regardless, this is mondo-ly amazing. So much easier to read through than the 30 paged character files I have to keep...

Wow - I love these - your colour art is amazing (how do you do that? I spent so long focussing on line art that I colour like a six year old). It's so interesting to see how he's progressed, not just stylisticly, but his character, over the years - fantastic job :)

WHY ARE TUXEDOS SO SEXY IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME. D:

I should do this. It might stop my heart but I should do it anyway.

That silly drawing. I'd just sketched him out and was about to rough in his usual shorts and shirts, when I had that sigh-we've-done-this-a-hundred-times-before wave pass over. And then I was like, heeeey, he's already doing some dapper bow thing LET'S SEND HIM TO A MONSTER BALL IN A TUX HE TOTALLY DOESN'T ACTUALLY OWN! I need to mix up my characters' garb more often, I forget the results are usually amusing.

TAAAAIL. I forgot I'd given him some kind of rat tail in the beginning. Eeeh, not at all right. I guess I was probably trying to set something in contrast to the bulk of his body. I like the way he's wound up being evenly proportioned.

There is just that universal sense of a guy in a tuxedo that instantly spells out "dapper bloke". Doesn't necessarily involve him being hopelessly romantic or impossibly wealthy, just being sharp-dressed is enough. That and I guess my husband of the last ten or so years in a tuxedo or a sharp-looking suit sets me off something *shocking*...I need a drool bucket and a mop, help me XD

I ADORE that little sketch of Eric catching Z's all curled up and floofy. I suddenly see Cornelius poking him with a sharp stick looking for a reaction. Drunk, obviously. I don't know why I see that image, I just do X3 And Pirate!Eric. I'm on a *total* Pirate kick lately (Aardman Animations' new film <3), so seeing Pirate!Eric...oh be still my feverently beating heart <3<3<3

I just wanna curl up in his floofy tail and hug him lots

*GASP* OMG, CHIBI FLUFFERS!! That is seriously the most adorable thing I've seen other than the Cornelious 'newt' chibi. Also, I really love how you have that cross between Fluffers and Tony. It makes Fluffers look way more badass. And somehow more adorable. I don't even. Give him a hug for me? >w<

We need to send tiny Fluffers over to tiny Cornelius to cheer him up, or at least offer emotional support, or part of his cookie.

Eric: Whatev, I am SO badass. *shades*

Eric: *wiiide grin* And I shall give her a hug for you!

Wow, talk about changes! The old Fluffers was lookin kinda Scar/TLK for a bit there. And the old Eric looked a bit like Ben. But there is nothing like good ol' modern Eric and Fluffers (just want to hug him so see how fluffy he really is). Especially love the pic with him and Penny.

My thoughts exactly on Scar and Ben. You know, I never did manage to draw Eric the way I originally imagined him, this battered, haggard wanderer with hunted eyes. I kind of want to go back and pluck that design and use it for a new character, maybe even for the antagonist opposite Eric because it would be all tangled up and I dig that kind of thing.

I feel so... enlightened now. 8D I am a little confused though. When does he actually turn into Fluffers? Does it happen off and on when he's just being a little more of a glutton than usual, or...?

Sorry to hear you are having art block! I've actually been the same way lately. I hope it passes soon! C:

It's okay, Eric is a giant mess of confusing.

Waaaay back in the beginning, a good whiff of delicious food affected Eric as the full moon does a werewolf. But ever since repenting of his greedy rich bastard ways, his curse has been far more mild, increasingly so as it's frayed with the years.

These days, no, not even binge eating or raiding a chocolate shop would set off his curse. You see, Eric did learn his lesson and no longer even has the reckless mentality that was originally set to trigger his transformations. (That is not to say he can't talk himself back into it to set one off if he needed to. Situations where that would actually be useful are few.)

What actually sets him off these days is raw necessity- Eric's curse is keeping him freaking immortal, it's chewing up constant magical energy like, like... Fluffers in a candy shop. When it's gonna run out it kicks him into monster form, during which anything he eats transmutes into magical energy upon shifting back into scrawny human shape.

I draw him waaay too much as a monster. (Because I have a lot of human characters and very much enjoy drawing something else now and then!) Eric is actually only a monster a couple days every other month or more. So not often at all. But enough to make life complicated.

Er, making more sense now? XD

Or, hurray for missing the point! :XD: Naw, as I've said before, I'd personally expand or replace the sin of gluttony with general reckless indulgence, I don't even know why it's had to be this food-specific thing all this time. So I try to keep Eric multi-dimensional as well, and not gluttony = fat, stupid, ugly. I've known skinny people with terrible over-eating habits, and of course you can be a miserable glutton for a myriad of things beyond food. At the end of the day these things are only a tiny piece of who a person is, so Eric gets to be a real, fleshed-out character beyond this one issue.

I have run into other skinny embodiments of the sin, they tend to be my favorites as well. Makes things less straight-forward.

And thanks! (:

I absolutely love what you did here, and all the notations. This is a great way to show people the progression of the artist's relationship with the character as well. I love seeing your raw sketches, mixed with the colored ones as well, because you can still see that sketchy energy captured in the final render. I love all the poses and how you translate a single character into other animals. I think your humans are still the best! I'd love to do something like this with one of my characters, but all my old-old art of them isn't worth showing XDDD These, on the other hand, look great, even many years ago!
