Took a personal art break for sanity's sake here. Luvers Cornelius n' Diana because they are freakin' adorable.

Soo, I haven't been logged into dA for about two weeks on account of finals, and will be disappearing again here for the second half. It occurred to me I should probably have announced an internet hiatus before vanishing, you'll have to forgive me, it's that time of year and I'm out of my tiny little miiind.

It also looks like I have exactly 1,402 messages. BRING IT, INBOX.

Obligatory superfluous info from my notes...

Single at forty, these two'd long been resigned to dying alone. Representative Diana Brooks was that gorgeous woman who found her work inexplicably more interesting than her coworkers. Senator Cornelius Montrey was that supercilious rich guy who was never quite rich enough to make up for his personality...

After the latter's little fall from grace crushed his spirit, Diana, always drawn to stem the suffering of others (even of certain persons she'd spent the last few years guiltily day-dreaming might get hit by a car), invited the ex-senator out for coffee and what turned out to be a very therapeutic chat. Over the months meetings became a weekly then daily thing, until they found themselves waking up in each other's beds and have been happily together for three years now. They're not legally married (because of politics) but are effectively a couple.

Diana has a way of taking Cornelius seriously but not too seriously, and of knowing just what's bothering him and how to get him talking about it. Their relationship is definitely one of dependence; Cornelius would go back to being a suicidal heap of misery without her constant support. He needs her something terribly to reassure him he's not hideous outside or inside. And in return he loves her so much it aches. He's a totally different person around Diana, she's the only person he'll let his hair down for, as it were.

To this day Cornelius wears a happy shell-shocked smile around her, still not quite believing this amazing person is in love with him. She has to remind him that drooling in public does not befit a gentleman.

This reminds me of how my significant other and I are... We are both very proper, so we don't do much of the... Uh... Wierd things any people our age do within the darned hallways of high school. To see something much like our tenderness is actually really sweet... But then again, most of my friends call me the granny of the group. I hate looking around and seeing what everyone thinks love is meant to be, or how people think it is supposed to be expressed. You can tell when two people have the genuine thing, because they don't have to display that they love each other, they are comfortable with each other, that just sitting side by side is enough to satisfy the other.... Silly teenagers... Well, I am 17, so I guess that would make me one too, but in all technicalities, I am a grandmother in the head, soo... Oh well.

But still, the relaxation between the two is amazing. Wonderful work!

. . . ;w;

I can't even begin to explain how much I love this pair. They are precious beyond all reason and I am so completely happy that they've got one another for support.

Maybe I'm biased. But I think Cornelius needs and deserves a woman as attentive and caring as Diana to balance out his left-brainedness.

So cute, and I love the little story of them. I swear Cornelius is like a basset hound puppy... even if he's happy like here he has that sad droopy face. Diana pull at that mopey face to make him get a honest goofy smile! Oh wait... I am sure Penny would be more likely to do that to her brother then Diana. Oh well, he's happy, in his weird way of showing it and that makes me happy too. :)
Altalamatox Featured By Owner Jun 4, 2012
Ha! Yes, a basset hound is a perfect way to describe Cornelius' face. XD Just wait twenty years and he'll really be getting to look like one. It's those sad, heavy eyebrows I've shackled him with, they're great for putting a melancholy edge on his every expression.

 Oh dear, I wonder if he cringes at all at that idea how much he'll look like a droopy eyed puppy in later years...

So I have to say--I am not much of a romantic. I don't usually enjoy pairings or pairing art just by nature of the romance... HOWEVER, this is one couple I really love. Their relationship is impossibly adorable. I was happy to learn more about them, too! And the soft colors in this picture are lovely. Very calming and sweet.

*squees like an idiot* Can I give them both a hug or will it be interrupting? :D
Altalamatox Featured By Owner May 20, 2012

No, seriously, I would pay you money to give them a surprise hug and then bolt, their faces would be priceless.

Cornelius: The devil was that?
Diana: I thought you said we were alone!
Cornelius: Well, we're on the third floor balcony, I'd have thought we were!
Diana: Penny's behind this in some way.
Cornelius: Naturally.

Clearly I would have to paratrooper my way down there from the sky, if that's the case. Then jump off the ledge after I hugtacklepounced them. I'd wear one of those wing-suits and glide away like a flying squirrel. Best. Moment. EVER.
Altalamatox Featured By Owner Jun 4, 2012
Now I want to paint a sequel to this, with Diana laughing uncontrollably and Cornelius clutching his heart and a tiny wing-suited figure gliding away against the moon.

Fictional characters. Fantasy fictional characters. They need to be ready for anything, poor people. :XD:

Can I just say that I love you so much right now? Because I love you so much right now >w< And I think forcing the most random, bizarre things upon our characters is the most fun part anyhow.

Cornelius x Diana forevaaaaah.

Cornelius has a lot of reasons to love Diana. But I do wonder what's Diana's reasons for being in love with Cor? Hrmmmm.

Also, good luck with the finals! Show the finals who's boss!
Altalamatox Featured By Owner May 2, 2012
Now THAT is a wonderful question... :XD:

Her reason is not so much something he has as something he doesn't. Diana's at her best when needed and appreciated, and she is HIGHLY needed and appreciated by Cornelius as a source of confidence and affection, both things he's lost in himself, for himself. It sounds selfish or manipulative to frame it this way, but she's essentially touched by his dependance on her. That kind of devotion is pretty heady stuff.

On a more superficial level she thinks he's reasonably handsome and totally majestic in both forms and loves his voice. They're both chatty political types and she enjoys that they can lock each other into some really heavy discussions and debates without dumbing-down their parlance.

Thank you!

The idea of Cornelius following her around like a giant, Galatini-shaped dog will now not get out of my head.

Also, bluh, finals. Mine start in a fortnight and I've been so busy with the coursework module I have done no. Work. ._. Good luck with yours anyway, I'm sure you'll ace them!

Oh god! This is so sweet and I can't stop smiling! One thing I like is that you have them be an older couple, it's not just the youngins that get to have romance.
Audisey Featured By Owner May 1, 2012  Student General Artist
D'aaw. Your notes of them made me giggle so much! They sound so sweet - however, I had no idea they weren't already married. Interesting! It's good to see poor Cornelius has a perfect person to talk to and share all his little secrets with. ^^

Good luck with your messages, and I'm sure we're all understanding enough when it comes to how swamped you are! But, that's all in a great artist's work; crushing hearts and taking names leaving so good of an impression that everyone begs for more or craves to leave their perspective behind!

I'm not much of one for romance, but something like that will get me every time.

Ohh, I was wondering where you'd got off to. Shoulda guessed.

Yes. They are adorable. I love these two, and Cornelius is really, amazingly lucky to have Diana. (And by extension, so are we.)

And I totally can't help it and I'm sorry, but they very much remind me of a certain pair of my own (currently platonic but no less affectionate) and it makes me smile. We should introduce them sometime.
mad-and-mirthful Featured By Owner May 1, 2012  Student Digital Artist
Oh, this is so sweet! It's nice to see genuine affection in art, and not all that face-eating that seems to be the "ideal romance".
Altalamatox Featured By Owner May 20, 2012
Oh dear lord yes. I think I'm in the minority for thinking kisses in general are awkward at best, nauseating at worst. Especially in artwork because people are frozen right in the act and it's just... easy to make look dumb.

I've a horrible bias against romance and it's bad of me, I'm trying to embrace the idea that love in stories doesn't have to be overblown and saccharine, to the infinite joy of my cast who were certain they were all going to die alone. It's been fun trying to navigate the chemistry between various relationships. I'm finding when you're building relationships around characters instead of characters around relationships you end up with startlingly real, varied couples. These two definitely lie closest to the Hollywood ideal romance, and they are old and uncool politicians and one of them isn't even human so they're not even particularly ideal...
mad-and-mirthful Featured By Owner May 20, 2012  Student Digital Artist
I understand you there. At first, I was extremely iffy on writing any sort of romance for my characters, because there's such an exaggerated view of romance out there nowadays. I have never even been able to read that particular genre, because I've always like the soft, gentle, sitting-on-a-swing-holding-hands type affection. And most romance novels out there tend to be just glorified smut.

Now that I've actually tried to put my characters with a partner, I've found that, depending on personality, you can get all sorts of different kinds of romance, from gentle and loving to... not so gentle. It's something that I didn't expect, but I am loving the fact that even now, I'm learning brand new things about these older-than-dirt OCs of mine.
