Oh man, dA. It's been a while since I've really been engaged here, I feel like I've missed a lot. As usual very nice people are very nicely waiting for me to remember to get online and get back to them. Sorry, guys.

Haven't had the energy to do a lot of art lately. Treated myself to a painting marathon yesterday and most of yesternight. Which means I've spent most of today and tonight carving away at what is supposed to be a magazine layout.

Aand, Tox is confusing the artist's comments box with the journal widget again. This here's a sort of love letter to the current season from Ben and I. And completely lineless. What a nice feeling.

I fail to represent this, but Ben's commonly seen with a cane on account of a screwy knee. It's a swordcane. In an even more literal sense. It's his sword, sometimes, and sometimes it's this long walking stick thing. You know it because it's always got the three rubies set into it and because of its habit of being immediately lost when put down, if you're not Ben. It's a very loyal enchanted-stick-of-various-materials-and-make and Ben's only truely treasured possession. But that's knights and their swords for you. Besides cycle through sword, cane, and stick at Ben's command, it doesn't do anything else of note, that I've been informed of.

dA's new submission form. Bizarre. But I'll forget it ever changed within two weeks.

This might be my favorite of your characters, from what little I know of them so far. He reminds me of my favorite teacher from my old university, a Medieval Lit professor. Seriously, chop Ben's hair off to about "1980's Steven Spielberg" level, have him gain ten pounds or so, and you'd have my old professor. :)

This is just awesome!  I have been in the woods here in Ohio during the fall (especially during October)and the woods really do seem to glow as in your art.  I look at this and feel I am back in the October woods myself.  I love your work!

You know, the dumb thing is that this is mostly a fantasy for me. I live in the northwest, land of pine trees, so fall is pretty much the same color in our forests as any other time. I really really want to find myself in a deciduous forest in autumn at some point, they look so wonderful.

Oh they are.  I live in Ohio, and the leaves are literally breath-taking.  I'll find some pic's I've taken & post them so you can see.    Oh, did you see the note I sent you about a possible commission?

Just to clarify, I'm not meaning to criticize at all. I love all of your characters' designs and personalities, Ben included.
I was just curious, is all. :)

Hey, I was just wondering...Does Ben have any character flaws? He seems basically...perfect to me, but maybe that's just me. :)
Anyways, as usual, amazing art. I am insanely jealous of your skills lol.

No worries, I hear that a lot about Ben. ;)

There's a few reasons Ben is kind of odd among my characters. Ben was either my last imaginary friend or my first character. He was really just a comfort blanket in the beginning, and remains so for me in a lot of ways. He is also a fun-house mirror of myself physically and mentally and I consider his personality built of all the things I am not but really would love to be. So as a character he has all this dumb real-world baggage from my relationship with him as a creation over, what... the last thirteen years? And, somewhere in those thirteen years I was a teenager- an angry teenager. I beat the shit out of Ben, just did horrible things to him just to see him keep smiling and moving forward through the slog of dark and emo stuff I pelted him with. He was paraplegic, then he was dead, then he was cursed, then he was hunted, then he was imprisoned, then all of the above at once. I think I kind of like to make up for that these days. So I like to say, that if Ben seems like he's got it unusually easy for one of my cast, it's because he's already died and gone to heaven. (:

That said, but of course Ben has flaws! :D He's terribly lazy, non-confrontational (in a way that leads him to fold on his morals to avoid trouble), an IDIOT when it comes to 16th-century+ technology (he is from a pretty backwards society, but that's no reason he shouldn't be able to pick up some things), forgetful to the point of infuriating people, and for all his usual sunshine, he does fall into these quiet, grouchy patches on a regular basis when social contact is just hateful to him. Could be a product of being alone on travel a lot as young knight, or perhaps he's a bit like Magda, and is actually a good person because he is a bad person succeeding in squashing his distaste for people, because he believes the world would be better if we just all did so, even if it boils over every now and then.

Excellent question.

Beautiful! The linelessness (if that's even a word) really makes it pop. My area has had such a beautiful fall this year, unlike the past few years where they have been drab and short. It's enough to remind me why I love fall! And I'm with you on the lack of energy to do things you normally love, working two jobs without a day off for about a month has really sapped my strength to read and write.

I also love the amount of depth and warmth in this image; the colours are to die for * u *
Your lineless just keeps getting better and better, I love it.

And I always love to see how your characters are shaping up. The cane really fits him! : D

Is it just me, or is Ben getting older in your drawings of him?

Is he? It'd certainly serve him right. I think I've been more religious about putting the white in his hair and I've gotten, I think, a little better at aging faces without making them lumpy messes. I don't know. I just love to indulge in lined faces, they are weirdly so much easier than smooth ones.

That might be why I've noticed it, but there does seem to be some sort of change.
Have you tried drawing a super wrinkly face, then erasing all the lines? ehehe..

Oh god, I feel like that every time I draw a woman or kid or pretty guy. D: Sometimes I feel like I'm drawing more with my eraser than anything. It's a funny thing, showing form with as few marks as humanly possible.

Oooo, lineless! Very nice! I love how it's almost impressionistic, with the blotchy shading from the leaves. I've heard that's tricky.

I seriously admire your painting skills. You do such wonderful things with color that, in practice, I can never seem to comprehend. I'll be taking digital painting next semester though, and I'm suuuper excited >v<

I really have to experience a seasonal fall one of these days. It always looks so nice in photos and movies and things.

And good luck, I hope you get to paint pretty pictures forever too : )
