School Junk 2011-12 by Altalamatox School Junk 2011-12 by Altalamatox
School ends tomorrow for us, just in time for me to get sick off my ass. AWESOME. Hopefully my voice will be completely messed up tomorrow morning so presenting my final projects will be super happy fun time.

Anyway.

Project-based classes this year included digital photography, mixed digital media (Flash, Aptana, Audacity), two graphic design courses and an illustration class.

My major is Graphic Design and I hope with all my shriveled little heart I don't actually have to work in the field. I wanna be an illustrator or something and make pretty pictures and subsist on bread and water and suchlike. Typography is awesome but large parts of me just don't caaare.

Don't get excited about the tutorial site, it wasn't for serious.

Graduation in a year. Help me.

Edit: Oh, yes, sorry. Where do go? I attend a public university in the northwestern USA that almost nearly doesn't fund its art department. I went here originally for a science degree and if I'd known I was switching into art I would have gone somewhere more worth my time and money.

Your art inspires me so xD just a quick question, have you ever drawn ratchet and clank? or like it xD i was looking over some of their concept art , since thats my favorite type of art, and some reminds me of something you would do. HOW can you admire other artists D: your work is the best it gets! xD

PFFT, 'course I admire other artists! I admire them like nuts. My idols make me want to cut off my right hand and stop shaming the name of art, and they also make me want to practice my mind out to get where they are. I'm nothing special, though I'm glad you like what I do! <3

I have not played Ratchet & Clank, but it's on my list of games to get a hold of. Funny thing, I came across some of their concept art myself last week and got all excited. It is very good stuff!

I'm going to guess that while you are clearly enjoying the projects, you wouldn't say the art department of that particular university is worth investing in?

I've been contemplating a university or college for art, but I'm extremely picky. Being a writer, college was never an interest to me as the money for writing degrees isn't worth it, and I've invested my time and money better in seminars and demonstration collaborations. But when it comes to art, I need that physical environment and motivation to get me really into it. Thing is, I'm not looking for a degree, I just need the education and understanding classes to get into art as deeply as I'd like to. I'm having such a difficult time deciding. Any factors I should be heavily interested in or tips you'd think would help?

I feel your pain on the subject of nearly-non-existent art departments. Actually. Yours sounds larger... *envies* Seriously they offer about 10 art classes per quarter. Total. -_-;

are you TOTALLY sure that toothless, on the cover of your Nico Marlet book, wasn't designed by Chris Sanders?

I suppose I stand corrected. In my defense I own the HTTYD art book and it credits Marlet with all character design including Toothless. From what I've just dug up it sounds possibly like Sanders conceived the design and Marlet developed it. I'm a little upset that wasn't made more clear. This does explain Toothless' much-noted design parallel with Stitch.

Christ, your art is so impressive. It blows almost everything I've seen in the art shows/programs at my university out of the water and then jumps it on a waterski. You've got nothing to worry about.

Oh, look at you blowing my mind and giving me something to shoot for.
I studied theatre, actually. Didn't know how to choose between art and theatre and so refused to pay for a real arty school if I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted, and ended up doing theatre. And while I greatly enjoyed it, I graduated still not knowing what I want and now attend a community college where I have just been accepted into the "new media arts" program, specialization: animation. Because animation is acting... just not with.... my body........
So my semester was filled with prereqs which also included the obligatory photography class and a digital art class that included a flash animation as the final. Ha.
Incidentally, I live in Hawaii, where the arts are also rather underfunded, unless of course they have something to do with Native Hawaiian culture... or various Asian cultures.
Anyway. I think what you can do is amazing. Good luck with next year : )

Your art really is fantabulous. I'm graduating in less than two weeks, and I certainly wish I had some stuff in my portfolio that looked as finished as this. The way you paint lighting has been inspiring me as of late... I will be absolutely floored if you don't end up with some kind of illustration job.

I know it seems ridiculous how often I fav your art, and it may seem silly of me to fav a compilation of your schoolwork, but I just love it to BITS! My favorites have to be The Speck, your Waves illustration, and the incomparably adorable Father's Day card. I'd buy the stuffing out of all of those. ALL of those. I wish you many much luck with your next and final year in college, and beyond! You OUGHT to be an illustrator, especially if that's what you want to do most. Your work is gorgeous, and I hope to buy a book of yours one day.

Yep! Biology. Zoology in particular, and I'm not talking on the cellular level. So not really worth pursuing from a financial perspective, at which point I decided I may as well go into art instead. It was a fun run, I'm glad I got to experience that kind of school and of course the material was FASCINATING, I just happen to have a strong interest in zoology but a raving mad soul-consuming obsession with all things art.

You're not in the same boat yourself, are you?

And thank you!

Biology. Cool. I have a few friends in molecular bio, but all of my "normal/general" bio friends seem to be in the equine program.

Eh, sort of. I was in Chemistry, but after struggling with it for the past two years, I decided that I just didn't have enough passion for it, and made the switch to Computer Science. Fortunately, I'm able to stay in the same school, as the chair of my new department is really helpful in making sure I still graduate on time (helped that I took some basic level classes already). Yeah, I still find a lot of it interesting, I'm just trying to find something I'm passionate in while I'm working on my novel(s). But, I suppose that's part of what college is for: finding out what you love and what you want to do.

Of course!

Wow! You seem to have an awesome arrangement of classes! I guess by the time I was accepted into the school I am in now the teachings turned into a major contemporary art study, nothing better than wanting to be an illustrator/animator and I'm stuck studying Hirst and Duchamp. Thankfully my senior year will be more flexible in material that I rather be doing and a few weeks ago one of my advanced drawing teachers told me to either adapt to the contemporary art world or find another job...thanks for the constructive feedback.

I love your work. It's actually very interesting to see your school work, since a lot of it is stuff we don't see very often from you. (Not like I'm bugging you about not posting your school work more! I haven't posted my school work much at all so I can't talk anyway.) I just find it fascinating to see how my favorite artists handle things that seem out of their comfort zone. It's a pretty big insight into what they can do. I'm actually very impressed by how well you can switch into different mediums and styles! It definitely shows you've practicing a lot.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who makes tons and tons of thumbnails for one assignment.

Anyway, thanks for sharing all of this! It's very inspirational, and I hope you do well being an illustrator.

You're doing a pretty wonderful job for a public university! I'm getting my gen eds for now, but I'm going to transfer to a different college in a year or so. I'm wanting to do illustration, but my mom wants me to do graphic design, but I've just heard so many bad things about it from other artists. :(

Maybe your school isn't known for arting, but it looks like you've been getting a good range of coverage. :) Kudos for sticking with the program... I took one introductory graphic design course years ago... I lasted three hours. Then I seriously contemplated throwing the computer out a window, but not before setting it on fire first.
