Style Meme - Jackie by Altalamatox Style Meme - Jackie by Altalamatox
I do enjoy this meme. Opted for Jackie this round as I'm still new to drawing her and was hoping it'd give me some early perspective on her design. Her piratey outfit, fiddly bangles, and nonsense hair paraphernalia were greatly simplified so I wouldn't strangle her with her own jewelry for having to redraw it eight times.

I went with Paul Kidby as a favorite artist of mine, he's the illustrator behind Terry Pratchett's Discworld series and kick-ass. I... can't even start. I just love everything he does and I'd love to be where he is as an artist in a decade or three.

Doing the shoujo panel always makes me laugh. Sorry, the only thing I find more annoying than super happy puppydog eye anime is super lazyass anime... like Pokémon. I'll never get over how astoundingly badly that series is animated. Then again, eight-year old me didn't think so when all I would have wished for myself was a Charizard of my very own...

Glen Keane forever. Just, for freaking ever. <3

~KenDraw! Oh god! This box is the hardest of all because there's a chance the artist will actually come by and see it. I'm sure I did this totally wrong but I tried. I've loved KenDraw's art since I ran into their gallery, stylistically it's like nothing else I get in my inbox and I adore the way they really, really push emotions and poses (and their OCs are wonderful!). Their art's just s'damn fun.

Aaaand, I never tag anybody so I threw something stupid into the tag box instead. My left hand has very, very minimal connection to my brain. Like, my brain requests we move the pencil in a circular motion, my left hand goes and makes a cup of coffee. This drawing looks like coffee was involved. Loooots of coffee.

Oh yeah... and realism. We don't talk about realism. >_>

Tom suffered through this meme a while back for the interested.

(Partly) why I like the Pokemon games over the animated series:…

The artwork for the game characters is lovely, while the anime is just horrid.

You're really versatile. I LOVE seeing all the different styles. Glen Keane is awesome! And I never noticed the difference between Pokemon animation/art and your average shoujo until you put these two together. And what's wrong with the realism? :)
But it's all fabulous! Love it

I'm not sure whether I don't ask you about it but -> do you really like Paul Kidby ? (I don't gonna sounds wrong) But I'm fan of Josh Kirby :D
Altalamatox Featured By Owner Jun 14, 2012
I like them both! Paul Kidby is my favorite of the two, though. :)
Ewela1130 Featured By Owner Jun 14, 2012  Student General Artist
Your taste :P Can I ask what is your faveurite cover ? My is this of Thud in view of idea of this :P But generally Josh is more artistic but some people say his arts are ugly and disgusting twisted.. Is not truth :P What are you think about ? :D
Altalamatox Featured By Owner Jun 16, 2012
Where I live, they publish many of Pratchett's books with boring covers with little artwork. It's sad. So I haven't seen many of either Kidby or Kirby's covers. I did love Thud's cover, and I like the artwork for Monstrous Regiment.

Aw, who says Kirby's art is disgusting? Nooo, I am actually very impressed by the sheer amount of detail in his paintings. His humans and creatures are on the lumpy, cartoony side of ugly, but in the best way. In the way that fits the Discworld perfectly.
Ewela1130 Featured By Owner Jun 17, 2012  Student General Artist
Oh, it's not nice :/ Maybe you should to try buy some Terry's books on ebay with oryginaly covers :P
From the Kirby I like the most Equal Rites and Soul Music ^^ Death on the motor :D And I like how he drew Vetinari on "The truth" xD
Who says it ? Evil people ! xP "In the way that fits the Discworld perfectly" I think same (or I should be the same)

this character is adorable and I totes adore her giant hair- that is some rockin' pirate hair. AND the realism looks awesome aaa especially the colouring on the skin just- yes. so smoooothhh
TsengEclipse Featured By Owner Sep 22, 2011  Hobbyist Writer
Pokémon Jackie amuses me more than it should because her spiky hair is kind of like the actual Jackie's (from
the Ranger movie, he was Duffman in the dub *facepalm*) but they're so otherwise massively different XD
You aren't the only one who wanted a Charizard ;-;

Omnomnom Discworld <3

I wonder if I could change this meme a little bit so it's writing-friendly? I'm totally partway through stealing your OC interactions meme in a similar vein, so I may as well maul all of the memes.

Wauw, you never fail to amaze me and make me giggle at the same time!
Beautiful work here, even the left handed one!~

Aaaaaaahhhhh Paul KIdby ahhhhhhhhhhhh Paul Kidby aaaa-

*draws breath* Yeah, ok, fanboying over. Seriously, that guy is amazing.
And so is this. All those pieces look spot on :XD: and the left handed one is pretty damn good! You'd not even be able to make out a face if I tried that, hah.

Hahaha, awesome, I also love Paul Kidby's work (favourite's the Discworld illustrations).
PS: The realistic version is a lil bit creepy, don't you think? XD

Paul Kidby is your favorite artist? That's brilliant! I also love his work, but none of my friends have heard of him.

Wow. This... .yeah. Wow. That's some talent you have there.
Quarter-Virus Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2011  Professional Filmographer
These always look so fun ... I ought to do it sometime. With Tommy, maybe, or Jaris ... or Horace. Man, realism would kill me. I'd shave his fur off for that one panel.

Paul Kidby's art really is amazing! My boyfriend's a bit of Prachett nerd and has a big book of his art. Me? I've read the Death trilogy and like to pore through that art book, but that's about the extent of it. I'm sure you can reach that point much sooner than three decades, silly! Look at where you are now!
chlorinesea Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
Oh god, the background on the shoujo one sells it. The spikey crazy hair on the pokemon one is pretty awesome too though.

Quit making me want to do memes >_>

I just realized that I am not the only one with a black character named Jackie. :C
Altalamatox Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2011
Small world, huh? I bet that's where similarities end. Jackie here is a book character come to life from a piratey adventure novel in the collection of an enchanted library who now manages said library's tech systems and hangs out with her bff the library ghost in her spare time. Yours?
Tatsu-Nana Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
Mine's an original species based off of a chinchilla with a psychotic scientist for a husband and a half-dead android for a son. Yeah, they're pretty different. XD

Tatsu-Nana Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
I got mine from a girl who dresses like my character lol.
azispaz Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2011
Left-handed has to be my favorite Jackie expression on here.

I love this girl. She seems like she'd be fun as hell to hang out with.

Oh yeah, and since you're obviously a fan of Glen Keane and Paul Kidby, you may take me now. Take me hard. Oh baby, oh baby (deadpan expression).

...and then I'm gonna rave on one thing for a moment. A big part of the reason I eventually quit drawing so much anime all the time was BECAUSE of the inexplicable rage the noses in the style were starting to throw me in at one point. Trying to draw Merric with masculine facial features while relying on an anime chicken-beak nose (my brother coined that one ;) ) always always ALWAYS made him into a pretty boy bishie, except nearly 40 years old, and it was just wroooong so many reasons. Merric was meant to be good looking, but not a pretty boy, and it was ultimately the NOSE that was making this impossible to do in my anime-ways.

Noses are such greatly varied things that alone can speak volumes about a character. For example, Fulton has a Doonsbury nose. That's actually not an example of anything, I just like to make that joke because it's true. And it's not as though anime as a whole hasn't ever had a well-drawn nose. It's just the way I drew anime that wouldn't come out that way. Or Shoujo. Shoujo anime is notorious for this kind of shit.

Eghk. Ighk. Aghk. Okay. I think you get it.

Akage-Karui Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2011  Hobbyist Artist
Anime "chicken-beak nose" that is greatest thing ever. xDD Thanks for the laugh.

Also I think the only anime I've seen so far that has expressive noses that match the characters if FMA and the characters have quite a bit of diversity.
azispaz Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2011
FMA is a great example, actually was one of the first to come to my mind when I thought about it. Especially in the original mangas, Arakawa has a great way of creating so much depth and shape with noses using so very few lines. It's amazingly good.

...yeah, he coined that one when we were playing Final Fantasy VII.
