Update 2011: Another year, another update. If you've been watching me for a while you know what these are.
I've noticed I probably draw Tom least (of the big four) but when I do he definitely tends to come out best. Of all my characters my finished pictures of him have been my favorites, I think some painting or other of him has been heading my front page 90% of the time I've been on dA.
----- Notes from ’09 original post:
Mostly for my own benefit* I wanted to compile some progression sheets for my major characters, so while I was home I hauled out my old art folders and scanned all I could find of the lot. Thought I'd make a pretty dA version as well, as I get requests to post some of my old stuff and also because Tom’s been building a modest fan following who might find this as painfully fun as I do.
So, we have the cynical cyborg from 2006 when I was an angry 16 year-old with a lamentable grasp of anatomy and he was Dr. Steel, a young man with one eye, a robotic arm, and a chip on his shoulder regarding his cyborginity, to mid 2009late 2010 mid 2011 when I am a lazy college kid with a lamentable grasp of anatomy and he is Dr. Thomas Destastiel, brilliant 120-year-old tech wiz living off life-support machines, spit and vinegar, and a fiery desire to synthesize an android for himself that is equal to (or better than) biology.
I'll be doing this for Ben and Cornelius as well, both of whom were at least ten times scarier than Thomas. I can guarantee you won’t recognize Cornelius; if you do you’ve been watching me far too long.
Yes! I finally have stumbled upon his sheet. Don't know why, but I do love Tom. Maybe it's an emotional side effect after having misread his company's logo for so long. Your progression....augh, I wish I had been able to (and CURRENTLY could, blast it) draw comics that well. And faces. And expressions. Have I mentioned yet that I am in complete love with your style?
Quirky question, but can Tom really change the color of his lights, or is that just your own creative licence? I mean, I know it's blue 99% of the time, but I was just curious. Though I couldn't see him really wanting that kind of thing anyway- it'd just be a waste of space and time to create.
Oh, and I agree with someone here when they wonder about a possible Altalamatox/Network website/blogs. That would be pretty enjoyable!
He's one of my nearest n' dearest so I'm always pleased to hear he's being enjoyed!
Good question! And you're right. There's not a lot of reason to be all fancy with them, and Tom, as you might have guessed, is not much into colors or switching up his outfit, so no, they really are blue and only blue. He can turn them off, of course, and there are just a few he can light up red for subtle visibility in the dim without blanking everyone's night vision.
Aw, gosh, you make me feel guilty! XD I've been meaning to make a site for ages now, I think a forced hiatus from dA for a month might be the only thing that'd actually get me to hammer one together. Somewhere within it I've played with the idea of actually writing the blog Charles Arrhenius is supposed to keep for the Altalamatox Library, recording the daily life and antics therein. Again, I blow rather too much time on dA to ever get any of this off the ground. >_>
ALTALAMATOX LIBRARY BLOG, PLEASE. THAT would be several kinds of awesome. You could just post them here. I'd read those like some people enjoy crack.
Don't feel guilty about it- websites are hard to create x| And manage. You'd kill all of your art time just trying to keep the silly thing going, so just take your time in deciding this. I'm sure I'm not the only one- besides whoever I saw- who would love to see that kind of thing!
A comic! Aww, too bad you didn't make more of those, lol. I think, with all your characters, and the details of their background and all that you have in your head, you could make a million comics, if you wanted to,lol. But hey, it would really be a good substitute to let your characters have a bit of free roam, since I'm sure you don't have the time to actually write a book with all of them crammed in there. Sooo...comic <<<less time consuming, book <<<more time consuming. The thought just came to me when I was looking at this particular deviation, Tom's Progression Sheet.
OH MAN. Noooooooo, I have to disagree, I think I could write ten books before I finished a single comic. I'm a slow writer but I'm paaaainful slow at comics. I'd like to mess with short graphic novels or something at some point but for now I am EFFING TERRIBLE at drawing the same character accurately even twice, my comics would look psychotic.
Er... >_> But thank you for your support. (: The argument could be made that I should shut up and try comicking because I'm not getting any better avoiding it...
Well, I'm not one to push a subject like that. And there's always the danger of creating art-block or something doing that. Sooo, I'm not going to have mobs come after me with flaming torches and pitchforks for THAT one, lol. You do your thing the best way you feel comfortable doing it, and when/if you feel like stepping outside your comfort-zone-bubble, then hopefully you'll do great! I love all the stuff I've seen from you, and I think if you did happen to try at the comic, you'd do awesome, even if you didn't think it looked awesome yourself.
I love how the design of the whole sheet matches his aesthetic. Also, the whole bit in a jar, him remotely controlling the body may have made me slightly less of a Tom fangirl...slightly. But also, you are overflowing with creativity and wonder and it makes my days better.
